HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface)

An acronym for High Definition Multimedia Interface. Standard equipment developed to interconnected power of digital audio and video via a single cable, which passed both the control data such as audio and video.

Similar to DVI (but use smaller connectors), the multi-pin HDMI interface transfers uncompressed digital video with HDCP copy protection and multichannel audio. Using an adapter, HDMI is compatible with most DVI connections.

HDMI is a relatively new interface for the fully digital transfer of audio and video data. HDMI was introduced by the industry specifically for the home entertainment sector where ever more digital components are used and also the software is now mainly available in digitalised form (e.g. DVD, DVB etc.)
