PAL

It is the international standard for transmitting video in Europe. Higher resolution that NTSC.

PAL:

An acronym for Phase Alternate Line. It's the TV system with which it is broadcast in Spain and many other countries. Any TV receiver to be used in Spain must be of such a system.

The PAL format is actually made up of 625 line but only 576 lines are used so that televisions have time for the electron gun to reset to it's home position. A useful result of this is that broadcasters can use the spare line for teletext
